WELCOME TO BOWAC

The Bridge of Weir (River) Angling Club is a local group administering the fishing on the River Gryffe for the benefit primarily of Bridge of Weir residents. Membership is open to all with residential qualification. Associate membership is also possible but there are conditions written into our fishing leases that limit total numbers in this category.

The professional costs involved in setting up this website have been funded via a lottery grant. The case was made that the function of the SITE was to serve a local group, to stimulate local interest, to update the members on the activities on the water and within the Club and hopefully to attract more local people to the club. Encouraging young people away from computer screens, admittedly via the self-same mechanism, into the more healthy open air was seen as a particular aim. Sportscotland approved our application via the Awards for All programme.

Until the late 1980s the river was a trout and grayling water. Since then however, with the demise of the industry in the village, a reasonable salmon run has developed. The Club has obtained leases that allow members to fish for all species, including the salmon, in the river. It is pointed out that for the occasional fisher, the angler maybe with rod, reels, fly lines geared for the odd days trout fishing that these could be used for salmon also. Other than in spates the Gryffe is a small river and trout tackle would allow adequate coverage of the water. No excessive costs need be incurred, only those involved in beefing up the terminal tackle. It is also pointed out that on the greater part of the water bait and spinning are also allowed.

Having read to this point we now invite you to delve into the detail of the SITE to find out more about us and what we are doing. "
